Engineers Welcome: New Opportunities in Germany
"German Engineering" is a brand name all its own - and one that many students are increasingly proud of attaching to their resumes as a result of internship or study abroad experiences. More and more German universities are offering opportunities for international students to spend time learning the ins and outs of how engineering is done in Germany, whether or not they speak German. This kind of experience can open doors both in Germany and at home. Just a few of your options include:
  • Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE): Over 200 students will be heading to Germany this summer to complete six to 12 week internships with German doctoral students at the top universities and research institutions across the country. Fellowships are provided by DAAD for these outstanding young scientists and engineers and no German is required. Graduates of the RISE program are eligible for RISE professional, an internship program in industry. For more information, click on www.daad.de/rise.

  • Summer Courses in Germany: If time is of the essence, there are plenty of opportunities to get a taste of German higher education through one of the thousands of summer courses offered by German universities. DAAD offers grants for courses that are taught in German (click here for more information), but there are other opportunities in English. High Tech in Germany combines study with research and possibly even an internship at one of Europe's premiere technical universities. And 10 new short-term programs at German universities (four of which are in engineering) have recently received the DAAD Quality Seal.

  • Master's Degrees: It can be tough to go abroad as an undergraduate engineer, but there are lots of new opportunities to earn a Master's degree or even a doctoral degree in Germany. Many of the new international degree courses are taught in English or a combination of German and English. Particularly well-qualified students can apply for a DAAD Study Scholarship to cover your living costs.
If you're a professor or administrator looking to find ways to help your engineers go abroad, DAAD can help there, too. Check out our pages on the Engineering Exchange to take a peek at upcoming workshops, see how you can apply for a group study visit to Germany, or learn more about engineering and engineering education in Germany.
